Note on Impossible Differential Attacks

چکیده

While impossible di erential cryptanalysis is a well-known and popular cryptanalytic method, errors in the analysis are often discovered and many papers in the literature present aws. Wishing to solve that, Boura et al. [1] presented at ASIACRYPT'14 a generic vision of impossible di erential attacks with the aim of simplifying and helping the construction and veri cation of this type of cryptanalysis. In particular, they gave generic complexity analysis formulas for mounting such attacks and develop new ideas for optimizing them. In this paper we carefully study this generic formula and show impossible di erential attacks for which the real time complexity is much higher than estimated by it. In particular, we show that the impossible differential attack against 25-round TWINE-128, presented at FSE'15 by Biryukov et al. [2], actually has a complexity higher than the natural bound of exhaustive search.

A new method for accelerating impossible differential cryptanalysis and its application on LBlock

Impossible differential cryptanalysis, the extension of differential cryptanalysis, is one of the most efficient attacks against block ciphers. This cryptanalysis method has been applied to most of the block ciphers and has shown significant results. Using structures, key schedule considerations, early abort, and pre-computation are some common methods to reduce complexities of this attack. In ...

Impossible Differential Cryptanalysis of Reduced-Round Midori64 Block Cipher (Extended Version)

Impossible differential attack is a well-known mean to examine robustness of block ciphers. Using impossible differ- ential cryptanalysis, we analyze security of a family of lightweight block ciphers, named Midori, that are designed considering low energy consumption. Midori state size can be either 64 bits for Midori64 or 128 bits for Midori128; however, both vers...

Impossible Differential Cryptanalysis on Deoxys-BC-256

Deoxys is a final-round candidate of the CAESAR competition. Deoxys is built upon an internal tweakable block cipher Deoxys-BC, where in addition to the plaintext and key, it takes an extra non-secret input called a tweak. This paper presents the first impossible differential cryptanalysis of Deoxys-BC-256 which is used in Deoxys as an internal tweakable block cipher. First, we find a 4.5-round...

New Impossible Differential Attacks on AES

In this paper we apply impossible differential attacks to reduced round AES. Using various techniques, including the early abort approach and key schedule considerations, we significantly improve previously known attacks due to Bahrak-Aref and Phan. The improvement of these attacks leads to the best known impossible differential attacks on 7-round AES-128 and AES-192, as well as to the best kno...

Improved Impossible Differential Cryptanalysis of Rijndael and Crypton

Impossible differential attacks against Rijndael and Crypton have been proposed up to 5-round. In this paper we expand the impossible differential attacks to 6-round. Although we use the same 4-round impossible differential as in five round attacks, we put this impossible differential in the middle of 6-round. That is, we will consider one round before the impossible differential and one more r...
